I'm not an employee nor a stockholder nor any beneficiary of NordicTrack. I just think that their ski machines are remarkably effective.
In fact, the nordictrack company has a problem with its ski machines. The machines are built so well and function so flawlessly for so long that effectively they never wear out. You probably won't be a return customer because the thing will be as good as new for as long as you can foresee using it. I'm on my 21st year with mine. It not only _functions_ pretty much as new, it also still _looks_ new. During a move, I think that one of the ski boards got just slightly bent, though, and it's producing just a slight bit of 'drag' at one extreme of the movement. Hence I'm looking at the EXCEL model.
I don't know how the company keeps going. The product can't be generating repeat trade. If it weren't for a fluke, I'd expect another 20 years out of my current model. The workout is as extensive as you need it to be, from a gentle low-stress glide to a full out aerobic workout. With the arm motion (which you don't have to use), the ability to incline the machine, and the right setting on the tension, this machine can produce any kind of workout you like from a warm up to a heart-pounding, sweat drenched full body aerobic experience. Some of the high-end exercycles (I won't name the brand, but it's the one with the air-resistance on the front wheel) come close, but NordicTraks get at a much wider range of muscle groups from the ankles up through the lower back and into the latisimus dorsi groups and even into the shoulders. You can set your own pace to accommodate where you are in any of those groups and where you want to increase or decrease tension. I don't think that you can get into the anaerobic range easily enough to get muscular hypertrophy, but you sure build muscular endurance as well as aerobic fitness, which develops fast.
Finally, and much touted, the machine gives you zero stress on the joints--no leg pounding, no knee pressure, just a smooth continual motion.
If you could have only one piece of aerobic equipment, it seems to me, this would be the one you want
