(More customer reviews)The FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 is expensive, but worth it. Even though this exercise machine is sold for home use, it is very close to commercial quality. The only negative design issue we found is with the "step-up" piece that is attached to the base. It is rigid plastic and seems to snap into place, where I would have hoped a component like this would have been made from steel and better secured. (It came off when we were placing the machine and has been somewhat loose ever since.)
Be aware that this item ships almost fully assembled. The only pieces that had to be attached were the arms, which went on very easily in about five minutes. The downside to this was the shipping box was enormous (the full height and length of the machine, plus a healthy amount of cardboard packing) and extremely heavy. I believe the box was about six feet tall and more than eight feet long, with the total shipping weight nearly 700 pounds.
Getting the machine out of the box was pretty easy, but moving it was very difficult. It barely fit through a standard 36 inch door and was so unwieldy, as it was fully assembled, that it took four very strong men to get it into the house. (It had to be moved up a few flights of stairs.)
Functionally, the Freestrider s7.8 is great. The 44 inch stride is longer than other machines and works your muscles in ways that a normal elliptical does not. The programs that automatically cycle through various speed and resistance settings are a great short-duration workout. Even at a full stride, the machine is quieter than a typical elliptical machine and significantly quieter than a treadmill.
Overall, the FreeMotion Freestrider is a quality machine with a substantial price tag. It is definitely on the higher-end of the cost spectrum, but going cheap with an item like this has drawbacks. Lower-end machines may not function as well or last as long. We thought about our machine much like an appliance. We would have it for many years and it made sense to invest in the one that would give us the best experience and reliability.
