My wife and I both had a gym membership until recently and our favorite machine in the gym by far was the elliptical. We have four children and getting to the gym every day is difficult so we decided to get a machine for our home. It was extremely important to us to find a machine that was comfortable to us and replicated a natural motion. We visited every sports store we could find and tried every machine we could find. After an exhaustive search, we narrowed our choice down to this model and the Sole E95. The Sole gets great reviews and has a price tag nearly twice that of the Reebok. We found a store that had both units and tried them out side by side. Both units are tremendous machines and we ultimately chose the Reebok based on the following points. 1. The Reebok is built with more heavy duty construction (More on this later). 2. My wife and I both felt more comfortable with the motion of the Reebok. It feels more natural to us and smoother. 3. We were turned off by the hand grips on the Sole. They are very large and my wife felt as though she could barely hold on to them. 4. We did not want price to be a major influence on our decision. We decided that if we could find a machine that we will use regularly, it would be worth it to us. We did, however, purchase the Reebok for half the cost of the Sole.
I am an engineer and with the children I have assembled hundreds of items in my life. One thing I look at very closely when I make a purchase is quality of construction. This thing is built like a tank! I was extremely impressed with the design of this machine. It is built to last. There was not a single machine that we looked at that even came close to this one. You will find heavy duty steel construction throughout and quality, heavy assembly hardware that goes together very well. On this note, if you purchase this machine WITHOUT STANDING NEXT TO IT FIRST, YOU WILL BE SURPISED BY ITS SIZE AND WEIGHT. This thing is huge as ellipticals go and if size is a major factor in your purchase, do not buy this machine. It is also very heavy. Once assembled, you will not want to move it around at all. The size of this machine was actually a selling point to us. We have a perfect place for it and we are not going to be moving it around and the size and weight of the machine makes it incredibly stable.
We have not noticed any unusual noise from ours yet but it is possible for the round shield on the side to get off center and rub on the housing. The manual details the method to adjust the shield to fix this problem. Ours runs as quietly as you would expect a machine like this to run. It is definitely quieter than the high-end models we use at the gym. We can easily watch TV as we work out.
This model has all the features you need on an elliptical. It has several preprogrammed workouts with fully adjustable resistance as well as a manual mode and target heart rate mode. Heart rate is taken either through the stationary handles or a chest strap. It has dual, three-speed fans mounted at the top of the console and they are surprisingly effective. The pedals have a 20" stride length and since this is a front wheel model, the footpads are far enough from the wheel that the vertical travel of the footpads is relatively low, a big selling point to us. When we are on this machine, we feel as though we are on the $4000 machines at the gym.
PROS: Natural, smooth, quiet motion. Excellent features. HEAVY-DUTY construction. Extremely solid and stable. Compares to high-end health club equipment.
CONS: If you do not want a bulky, heavy machine, this machine is not for you!
